Jaishankar Attends First Day Of Bilateral And Multilateral Meetings In New York

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had a full and packed first day of bilateral and multilateral talks with his global counterparts, exchanging views on enhancing bilateral ties and issues of common concern as he arrived for the high-level UN General Assembly session.

Jaishankar started the ground running shortly after landing in New York early Friday, starting the day with a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Quad Foreign Ministers, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa.

The group’s unwavering support for the United Nations, the enduring importance of upholding mutually determined rules, norms, and standards, and deepening Quad cooperation in the international system were repeated in a joint readout of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting issued following the meeting.

Jaishankar met with Kamikawa, Japan’s new top diplomat, and exchanged views on our Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

On ‘X’, Dr. S Jaishankar wrote, “Delighted to meet Foreign Minister of Japan Yoko Kamikawa at #UNGA78. Discussed our regional, multilateral, and global cooperation and taking them forward”.

When Jaishankar informed them of the passage of the landmark Women’s Reservation Bill in the Indian Parliament, Pandor and Vieira applauded and congratulated India in a heartfelt gesture.

Jaishankar stated that he had a good conversation on connectivity, economic linkages, and regional dynamics during his bilateral meeting with Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani.

Later in the day, Jaishankar met Lord Tariq Ahmad, UK Minister of State for the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, and the United Nations at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

Jaishankar went on to say, “A useful stocktaking of our relationship. Also discussed recent developments pertaining to Ukraine”.
