With the support of the members backed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, T Ismail — who was elected with the backing of Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) — has been elected the president of Talapady gram panchayat in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district
Pushpavathy Shetty, a supporter of the BJP, was unanimously chosen to serve as vice president at the Thursday election at the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam gram panchayat auditorium.
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday requested clarity from Congress regarding its alleged relationship with the outlawed organization Popular Front of India and its political branch SDPI, which is fueling an upsurge in political squabbles ahead of the Karnataka Assembly elections.
Out of the 24 total members, 13 members were elected with support from the BJP, while 10 members received support from the SDPI.
Only one member of the gram panchayat is supported by the Congress.
Recieved same amount of votes
At first, the candidates for president, Satyaraj, supported by the BJP, and T Ismail, supported by the SDPI, received the same amount of votes.
Even though the BJP had been counting on Satyaraj to easily win with party support, the results shocked the saffron party because two of its members had cast cross-votes in favor of Ismail.
Vaibhav Shetty, a Congress-backed candidate, and Habiba, a candidate supported by the SDPI, had skipped the voting.
The child development project officer and returning officer Shwetha then made the decision to randomly select the winner of the presidency.
In the course of this, Ismail was chosen as the president in the presence of Keshava, the panchayat development officer.

T Ismail commented on his victory by saying, “I get along well with people from all the parties, and ideology is what divides us, not caste, creed, or religion. Due to my previous administration’s impeccable record of openness and transparency, two BJP members chose me over their nominee. I applaud and welcome the council’s vice president, Pushpavati Shetty. My win should not at all come as a surprise because everything went as intended.
