Kim Jong Un
On Thursday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un fired the military’s top general and called for stronger war preparations, more weapon production, and expanded military drills.
Kim made the remarks during a meeting of North Korea’s Central Military Commission, which was discussing plans for countermeasures to deter North Korea’s foes, which were not named.
Without elaborating, General Ri Yong Gil was nominated to replace the military’s top general, Chief of General Staff Pak Su Il. It was unclear whether Ri will keep his position as defence minister.
Kim also established a goal for increasing weapon production capacity. He toured weapons companies last week, calling for the production of more missile engines, artillery, and other weaponry.
KCNA photos showed Kim pointing to Seoul and places surrounding the South Korean capital on a map.
The US has accused North Korea of supplying Russia with weapons for its war in Ukraine, including artillery shells, rockets, and missiles. Russia and North Korea have both refuted the allegations.
Kim also requested that the military undertake drills using the country’s most advanced weapons and equipment to keep its soldiers ready for battle.
On September 9, North Korea will hold a paramilitary parade to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Day of the Foundation of the Republic. North Korea has a variety of paramilitary organizations that it uses to supplement its armed forces.
The United States and South Korea are planning military drills between August 21 and 24, which the North perceives as a threat to its security.
