Authorities in Russia claimed on Sunday that trees toppled into a campsite during a violent storm characterized as a ‘hurricane’, killing eight people and injuring ten more.
Yevgeny Maslov, mayor of Yoshkar-Ola, stated, “According to the most recent information, eight people died in Mari El as a result of the hurricane that occurred the day before”.
Mari El is a Russian area located on the Volga River’s northern bank, with Yoshkar-Ola as its major city.
The emergency ministry reported that almost 100 rescuers were clearing debris at a campsite near Lake Yalchik and that 27 people had been injured.
“Vacationers did not take into account the weather forecast”, the ministry wrote on Telegram.
The emergency ministry noted that when the storm hit, several hundred people were tented along Lake Yalchik’s shoreline.
