Sinead O’Connor, an Irish pop singer who rose to international prominence in the 1990s, died at the age of 56.
“With great sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead”, her family announced on Wednesday.
Her family and friends are distraught and have asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Sinead O’Connor, who was born in Dublin, recorded ten albums during her career and is best known for her cover of Prince’s Nothing Compares 2 U, which was released in 1990.
Leo Varadkar, Ireland’s prime minister, led condolences to the singer, saying her music was loved around the world and her talent was unmatched and beyond compare.
“My heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and everyone who loved her music”, he wrote.
In 2018, the musician converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat. She was said to be dividing her time between Ireland and the United Kingdom.
