Officials announced Sunday that the death toll from overnight flash floods triggered by excessive rain in central Afghanistan has risen to 26, with more than 40 people still missing.
The spokesman for the State Ministry for Disaster Management, Shafiullah Rahimi stated 31 people have been killed in floods across the country since Friday, and considerable damage to property and crops has occurred.
According to government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, urgent relief is being delivered to the main disaster zone in the Maidan Wardak province Jalrez district.
Despite being on the western end of the Asian monsoon footprint, flash floods occur on a regular basis throughout the rainy season as torrential rain runs down dry riverbeds.
“Since Friday, 604 houses in Jalrez have been entirely or partially damaged, and hundreds of acres of agricultural land and orchards have been devastated”, Rahimi continued.
“In the last four months, 214 people were killed in natural disaster-related incidents across the country”, Rahimi added.
