On Sunday, Sheikh Marefat Ali Islam, a prominent Bangladeshi diplomat visited Soro Hospital in Odisha’s Balasore district to extend consular help to Bangladeshi passengers injured in the triple train crash.

According to Islam, a few Bangladeshi passengers were being treated in different hospitals in Odisha but no citizens of that country had died in the incident.

Mr. Islam said, “One Bangladeshi passenger admitted at a Bhadrak hospital was discharged after treatment. Another has been referred to SCB Medical College in Cuttack. On Saturday, I visited a Balasore hospital”.

The second secretary in the Bangladesh deputy high commission which looks after eastern India, Sheikh Marefat Ali Islam explained, “If there’s any information on injured Bangladeshi patients, please dial our deputy high commission at Kolkata – 9038353533”.

“Several unclaimed bodies are lying in a few hospitals in Bhubaneswar. We will have to find out if there are any Bangladeshis among them”, Mr. Islam added.

He thanked the Odisha government for its assistance in locating injured and deceased Bangladeshi citizens in various hospitals.

Every year, over 20 lakh Bangladeshis travel to India for medical treatment, with many of them choosing medical institutions in southern regions.

Three trains were involved in the pile-up, which is now being regarded as one of India’s worst train accidents: Shalimar-Chennai Coromandel Express, Bengaluru-Howrah super fast, and a goods train.

At around 7 pm Friday, the Coromandel Express collided with a halted goods train, derailing most of its carriages.

A few Coromandel passenger wagons collided with the last few coaches of the Bengaluru-Howrah Express which was passing by at the same time.

Investigators are looking into possible human error, signal failure, and other potential reasons for the three-train collision.
