On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said decisive leadership and effective policies had helped the country make progress in tackling Naxalism. He stressed that good intentions must translate into concrete action.
Speaking to security personnel in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, the Prime Minister said several crucial steps had been taken to protect national security, including measures whose details had not been made public. These decisions, he said, weakened the financial networks supporting Naxalites and separatist groups.
PM Modi explained that operations against counterfeit currency networks disrupted their financial resources and supply channels, restricting access to weapons and making it harder for Naxalites to move around and recruit members.
Recalling the casualties suffered during the prolonged insurgency, the Prime Minister said Chhattisgarh alone had lost more than 1,000 security personnel. He criticised previous leadership for failing to respond adequately, despite years of repeated attacks and loss of lives.
According to PM Modi, records from 2004 to 2013 showed that annual security personnel casualties exceeded the number of Naxalites killed. He further recalled the 2010 Dantewada incidents, including an encounter in which Maoists killed 76 CRPF personnel and another attack in which assailants killed 44 civilians.
The Prime Minister said Naxalite violence had once prevented people from exercising their voting rights, with attacks reaching 2,000 in a year. He accused earlier governments of treating the insurgency as an unsolvable problem.
PM Modi said the country’s response began changing after 2014, following his appointment as Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister highlighted a major security achievement, claiming that CRPF personnel had completed the preceding year without suffering any fatalities while on duty. He attributed this achievement to stronger policies and the courage, determination and discipline of security forces.
