Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has shared artistic impressions of the proposed redevelopment of Terminal 1 (T1) in Mumbai.
The airport presented the visuals during a meeting with the Airport Airline Operators Committee, outlining its vision for a modern, passenger-focused gateway.
Commissioned in 1964, the existing terminal requires replacement. Independent audits by Structwel in 2017 and IIT Bombay in 2024 highlighted significant structural and safety concerns.
The proposed terminal aims to combine contemporary architecture with Mumbai’s cultural identity.
The concepts feature a spacious departure entrance, a naturally lit check-in hall with local art, landscaped interiors and premium lounges overlooking the runways.
The arrival area could feature a large flamingo sculpture celebrating Mumbai’s biodiversity. These artistic impressions illustrate the intended design rather than a final representation of the completed terminal.
The redevelopment plans aim to increase annual passenger handling capacity by 33%, from 15 million passengers per annum (mppa) to 20 mppa.
Check-in counters will rise from 74 to 109, while security facilities will expand to 15 passenger lanes and five transfer lanes.
Contact stands will increase from seven to 25, alongside 12 modern electronic gates. Baggage reclaim belts will more than double from five to 11.
CSMIA plans to begin demolishing the existing terminal in April 2027. The expansion of Terminal 2’s north-west pier, expected to become operational by March 2029, will accommodate interim domestic passenger traffic.
The new Terminal 1 is scheduled for completion in December 2030. The wider development plan aims to increase Mumbai airport’s overall annual capacity to 65 million passengers.
The project seeks to deliver a safer, more efficient and distinctly Mumbai gateway, placing passenger convenience, cultural identity and modern infrastructure at its centre.
