Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday criticised the Congress over its poor showing in recent Legislative Council elections across four states, highlighting that voters cast their ballots using paper ballots.
In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi referred to elections for 28 seats across Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka before asking how many seats the Congress had secured.

The party failed to win any seats in three states, while counting for five seats in Maharashtra was reportedly still underway.
BJP Accuses Congress of Making False Electoral Claims
PM Modi’s remarks came amid opposition demands for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The results have also drawn attention as the INDIA bloc prepares for a rally against alleged vote theft at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1.
The proposed event has faced opposition from the ruling NDA, traders and members of the Sikh community because of the date’s association with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Earlier, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said the Congress had failed to make an impact in the elections despite the use of ballot papers. He accused Rahul Gandhi and the party of making false allegations about India’s electoral system.
Addressing a press conference, Trivedi argued that the results had undermined the Congress’s claims and pointed to its failure to secure seats.
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi also criticised the party, saying its electoral performance remained unchanged regardless of whether authorities used ballot papers or electronic voting machines (EVMs).
Meanwhile, the Samajwadi Party (SP) won the Agra Teachers’ constituency in Uttar Pradesh, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) secured victory in the Patna Teachers’ constituency during the biennial Bihar Legislative Council elections.
The results have intensified political exchanges between the BJP and Congress over electoral credibility ahead of the INDIA bloc’s planned protest.
