UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has conferred the First Class Order of Zayed II on Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar and fellow flydubai crew members in recognition of their courage and professionalism during an alleged in-flight terror incident in September.
Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum presented the awards and praised the crew for prioritising passenger safety.
The honour reflects the UAE leadership’s appreciation for individuals who show courage and dedication while protecting lives.
Senior officials attended the ceremony, including Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Court for Development and Fallen Heroes’ Affairs, and Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Airports.
The crew thanked the UAE President for the honour, calling it a source of pride.
On September 30, Omani co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami allegedly attacked Machchhar with a crash axe aboard Tel Aviv-bound flydubai flight FZ 1073. Despite his injuries, Machchhar alerted the crew as passengers intervened.
Four passengers reportedly played a crucial role in restraining the co-pilot and assisting the injured pilot. Yaniv Hayun, a plumber, helped overpower al-Hammami and reportedly used knowledge gained from the television programme Mayday to help stabilise the aircraft.
Asaf Rajuan helped restrain the co-pilot, while Zvika Manes secured him with earphones. Dentist Shota Musaev provided first aid to the injured Machchhar.
The honour highlights the importance of preparedness, teamwork and quick decisions during aviation emergencies.
The Order of Zayed II recognises distinguished service, while Machchhar’s inclusion highlights Indian professionals’ contributions to the UAE aviation sector.
