On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress of undermining India’s international reputation, alleging that the opposition party seeks foreign intervention and questions the country’s progress to protect its leadership from criticism.
Speaking at the NDTV World Summit in New Delhi, PM Modi contrasted India’s ambitions for a new era with what he described as attempts by political opponents to tarnish its image abroad. Although he did not name Rahul Gandhi directly, his remarks included criticism of repeated attempts to promote the Congress leadership.
The Prime Minister alleged that the party’s focus on its leadership had come at the expense of India’s achievements. He claimed that the Congress was placing pressure on its own senior members, some of whom, he suggested, privately disagreed with the party’s direction.
PM Modi further argued that the Congress’s approach was restricting democratic debate by overshadowing other opposition voices. He said younger parliamentarians from rival parties were struggling to gain attention because of the Congress’s emphasis on a single leader.
In another criticism, PM Modi alleged that the party had come under the influence of what he called ‘ideological Naxals’, claiming this had weakened its independent thinking.
Turning to India’s future, the Prime Minister said the country was moving towards a new phase of development despite international uncertainty. He reiterated his commitment to the Viksit Bharat vision, presenting the confidence and determination of India’s 1.4 billion people as central to achieving national goals.
PM Modi said India would continue to pursue innovation, address its challenges and ensure that its progress contributed to wider global prosperity.
