Mumbai Indians and Mahela Jayawardene have mutually agreed to end their association, paving the way for a new head coach ahead of the next Indian Premier League season.
The decision follows a disappointing 2026 campaign in which the franchise recorded only four victories. Injuries, player availability concerns and reported dressing-room tensions added to the team’s difficulties.
Reports suggest Mumbai Indians have shortlisted several candidates and plan to conduct interviews in the coming week. Jayawardene is unlikely to remain with the franchise in another role.
Jayawardene first became Mumbai Indians’ head coach in 2017 and guided the franchise to IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020.
His achievements established him as one of the most successful coaches in the team’s history.
He moved into the role of global head of performance between 2022 and 2024, overseeing coaching, scouting and strategic planning across Mumbai Indians’ international teams.
He returned as head coach in 2024 under a two-plus-one-year arrangement. Mumbai reached the playoffs in 2025 but finished ninth in 2026.
Jayawardene described Mumbai Indians as a special part of his career, thanking the players, coaching staff, supporters and owners Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their trust and support.
He said he would cherish the memories and achievements shared with the franchise and also wished the team success in the future.
Mumbai Indians owner Nita M Ambani also praised his contribution, highlighting his calm leadership, integrity and commitment to the game.
“Mahela will always be a part of our #OneFamily,” she said, wishing him happiness and success in his next chapter.
Mumbai Indians will now focus on appointing a new head coach as they prepare for the next IPL season.
