Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands Dr Dinesh Sharma inaugurated Indian Oil’s new barge, MT IRIS, in Sri Vijaya Puram on Sunday and flagged it off for operations.
The launch marks an important step towards improving petroleum transportation and strengthening energy security across the island territory.
The new vessel will enable Indian Oil to transport petroleum products in bulk instead of barrels. This shift will reduce manual handling and minimise the risks associated with fuel transportation.
Dr Sharma described the initiative as a significant move towards ensuring a safer and more dependable fuel supply to remote islands throughout the year, including during challenging weather conditions.
He emphasised the importance of reliable fuel availability in supporting residents’ daily needs and maintaining the smooth functioning of essential services across the geographically dispersed archipelago.
The improved transportation system is expected to make fuel distribution more efficient while reducing risks during handling.
Dr Sharma congratulated Indian Oil Corporation Limited on the achievement and extended his best wishes to the entire crew of MT IRIS. He wished them safe, successful and prosperous voyages.
The launch reflects efforts to strengthen fuel logistics and improve the reliability of petroleum supplies to communities across the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Vice Admiral Vineet Markoti, Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), attended the event alongside Jitendra Kumar, Executive Director of Indian Oil. Other senior officials and members of the public were also present.
MT IRIS will help Indian Oil transport fuel more safely and efficiently, meeting the energy needs of the island territory and supporting essential services.
