Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan on his birth anniversary, saying the government remained committed to fulfilling his ideals while working to build a Viksit Bharat.
In a post on X, PM Modi said Narayan’s appeal transcended generations and inspired people to view public life as an instrument of national renewal. He also praised the freedom fighter’s fearless voice during the Emergency and his commitment to good governance and reaching marginalised communities.
“We remain committed to fulfilling his ideals as we work to build a Viksit Bharat,” PM Modi said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to the veteran freedom fighter, remembering his lifelong dedication to the nation and society.
Shah highlighted Narayan’s role in mobilising young people during the freedom struggle, empowering rural India and advancing Sarvodaya after independence. He also recalled Narayan’s call for ‘Total Revolution’ during the Emergency, which became the voice of millions of Indians.
Shah said Narayan’s dedication to the nation and society would continue to guide future generations.

Born on October 11, 1902, Jayaprakash Narayan was an independence activist, socialist thinker and political leader. Popularly known as JP or Loknayak, he became a prominent figure in the movement against the government of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the 1970s.
His call for ‘Sampoorna Kranti’, or Total Revolution, became a defining feature of the movement against the Emergency and remains a significant part of India’s political history.
