Why Does Your Stomach Make Noises? Here’s What They Mean

Stomach noises are usually harmless and linked to digestion, hunger, gas, food habits and stress. Learn when they may need attention.

Why Does Your Stomach Make Noises? Here’s What They Mean

Stomach noises are common and usually form a normal part of digestion. The stomach and intestines contract to move food, fluids and gas through the digestive tract, creating familiar gurgling and rumbling sounds.

Hunger remains one of the most common reasons for a noisy stomach. When a person goes without food for several hours, the digestive system continues to contract and clear leftover material. These movements can produce noticeable sounds even when the stomach is empty.

Swallowing air while eating or drinking can make these sounds louder. Eating too quickly, drinking through a straw, chewing gum and consuming fizzy drinks can increase the amount of air in the digestive tract. The body then moves this air through the digestive system, producing additional noises.

Certain foods can contribute to increased stomach sounds. Beans and some vegetables may increase gas production, while carbonated beverages can add more gas to the digestive tract.

Large meals can have a similar effect because the digestive system works harder to process the food.

Stress and anxiety can influence digestion as well. Emotional stress can alter gut movements and make normal digestive sounds seem louder or more frequent.

In most cases, stomach noises do not indicate a serious health problem. However, persistent or unusual sounds accompanied by severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, prolonged diarrhoea, constipation, bloating or unexplained weight loss may require medical evaluation.

Regular meals, slow eating, adequate hydration and limiting foods that trigger excess gas can help reduce frequent stomach noises.
