Swachh Bharat Mission: Indian Cities Deploy AI, EVs, Digital Platforms To Modernise Sanitation

Indian cities are adopting artificial intelligence, digital platforms and electric vehicles to modernise sanitation services, an official factsheet said on Thursday, ahead of the 12th anniversary of the Swachh Bharat Mission.

Raipur Municipal Corporation has introduced a digital Faecal Sludge Management dashboard through the UPYOG platform.

Residents can book desludging services, make digital payments and track operations. The system locates addresses through mobile numbers or property IDs.

Drivers upload photographs after completing work. The dashboard helps monitor vehicles and improve resource planning.

Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation has deployed G-SPIDER, an AI-powered robot, to clean the Amayizhanchan Canal.

Machine vision and sensors identify waste and changing conditions. Its biomimetic claw handles irregular debris. The system reduces workers’ exposure to toxic gases, contaminated water and hazardous waste.

In Guntur, more than 200 electric autos collect household waste. GPS enables real-time tracking. The fleet saves over 71,000 litres of diesel annually and could cut greenhouse gas emissions by 21,000 tonnes over a decade.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has deployed 5,478 battery-operated e-rickshaws across 15 zones. Each covers about 40 km daily and cuts around 41 tonnes of carbon emissions each day, or 15,160 tonnes annually.

Indore uses 100 electric vehicles for door-to-door collection in core areas. GPS tracking through the Integrated Command and Control Centre improves monitoring and transparency.

Launched on October 2, 2014, the Swachh Bharat Mission has evolved towards digital, sensor-enabled and electrified urban sanitation.
