Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday criticised the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab over the state’s drug crisis.
Addressing a rally in Jalandhar, he accused the administration of allowing the illicit drug trade to flourish. Shah said the government had failed to deliver on its ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab’ election promise. He referred to the AAP dispensation as an ‘AAP-da’ or disaster regime.

The remarks came at the conclusion of the BJP’s 13-day Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra. The campaign began in Pathankot and travelled nearly 4,000 km across all 117 Assembly constituencies. It focused on village-level awareness and public outreach against narcotics.
Shah told the gathering that Punjab would be freed from the illicit ‘chitta’ trade before December 31, 2029. He said the BJP would focus strongly on the drug issue in the next Assembly election. His pledge was conditional on public support for the party.
He said the campaign received strong participation across Punjab. Shah said the yatra sought to connect directly with villages and encourage young people to join the fight against narcotics.
The Home Minister said he had met families affected by drug abuse during his Punjab visit. He highlighted the human cost of addiction and called for stronger action against those involved in the drug trade.
The Jalandhar rally marked the culmination of the BJP’s statewide campaign. The party has placed the drug issue at the centre of its political outreach in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly election.
