Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the Cabinet approval for the ‘One Network, Smarter Traffic’ initiative aimed at transforming traffic management in Delhi.
The technology-driven project will introduce real-time systems to improve urban mobility and make daily travel smoother for residents.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by PM Modi, approved the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) for the national capital.
The project carries an estimated cost of ₹1,789.52 crore, including taxes. Delhi Police will implement the system across 42 identified traffic corridors.
The initiative will combine real-time traffic data, adaptive signals, automated enforcement and integrated command-and-control systems.
These tools will help traffic authorities respond quickly to changing road conditions.
Adaptive traffic signals will adjust timings according to traffic flow. The system will coordinate signals along key corridors. This can reduce unnecessary stoppages and delays.
The project will roll out in three phases over 24 months. It will then enter a five-year operation and maintenance period.
The system will support priority movement for ambulances and enable quicker responses to congestion and road incidents.
Delhi has around 71 lakh active registered vehicles. Vehicle growth has outpaced road expansion, increasing pressure on the existing network. The new system seeks to use available road capacity more efficiently.
The initiative reflects the government’s continued focus on technology-led urban infrastructure. It aims to strengthen traffic efficiency, improve mobility and enhance everyday convenience for people across the capital.
