Students protesting alleged irregularities in the JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations held a silent march in Ranchi on Tuesday evening against police action during Monday’s Vidhan Sabha gherao.
The protesters marched from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium to Albert Ekka Chowk, covering around two kilometres, with a large number of students participating.
Several students tied bands over their mouths, while others placed fingers on their lips to convey their message of silent protest.
Participants also carried cut-outs of Shibu Soren and placards bearing slogans, while some used mobile phone flashlights to register their protest.
Students have been protesting since July 5 against alleged irregularities in the JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations. Their demands include cancellation of the disputed examinations, an independent probe into the alleged irregularities and comprehensive reforms in the recruitment process.
Devendra Nath Mahto, one of the prominent faces of the movement, has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past 10 days. His health deteriorated during Monday’s Assembly gherao, following which he was admitted to Sadar Hospital.
Devendra Nath Mahto said he will continue his hunger strike while receiving treatment.
During Monday’s Assembly march, protesters attempted to cross multiple layers of barricading and reach the Assembly premises. Police used water cannons and tear gas to control the situation, followed by a lathicharge.
The action reportedly injured several students, further intensifying anger among the protesters.
The students have maintained that they are raising their demands peacefully and democratically and said the movement would continue.
