External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday conveyed his condolences to Colombian Foreign Affairs Minister Omar Bula Escobar following the devastating earthquake in western Colombia.

Jaishankar expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and widespread destruction. He offered condolences to bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

The Minister said India remained prepared to provide all possible assistance.

The magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday.

According to the latest government update, the disaster has claimed 132 lives and injured more than 570 people.

Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella said the earthquake damaged 1,575 homes. It also affected infrastructure at six airports, forcing the suspension of commercial flight operations.

The government declared a state of national disaster to manage the extensive impact.

The Colombian Geological Service said the earthquake occurred at 07:34 AM local time, with its epicentre near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department.

The quake struck at a depth of 96 kilometres.

Authorities remain in contact with affected departmental capitals and local mayors. They are assessing the damage and identifying urgent relief requirements.

President Espriella took charge of the emergency response in San Jose del Palmar. He ordered a Unified Command Post at the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) to coordinate relief efforts.

The President sought a detailed assessment of the situation and immediate needs. He said he would travel to Pereira to support affected residents and oversee the government response.
