Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Dr Ronaldo Laishram during the 136th episode of Mann Ki Baat, saying the Manipur-born scientist has demonstrated that international success and pride in one’s homeland can go hand in hand. He said the achievement has earned recognition for both Indian science and Manipur’s renowned Loktak Lake.
PM Modi said Dr Laishram has built a distinguished career in astronomy and continues to honour his roots despite working in Japan. He remarked that, although the scientist shares his name with football icon Cristiano Ronaldo, he has made his mark through groundbreaking work in space research.
The Prime Minister said Dr Laishram contributed to the discovery of a massive young galaxy cluster and named it the Loktak Protocluster after Manipur’s famous Loktak Lake. He explained that the lake’s floating phumdis inspired the name because they resemble small islands drifting across the water, similar to the arrangement of young galaxies in the newly discovered structure.
PM Modi said the discovery has carried the name of Loktak Lake far beyond India’s borders and into the global scientific community. He described the accomplishment as a source of national pride and encouraged young Indians to pursue excellence while staying connected to their heritage.
The Prime Minister added that Dr Laishram’s journey proves people can reach the highest levels of global achievement without losing touch with their cultural identity, inspiring future generations to dream big and honour their roots.
