The Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the bail granted to Sonam Raghuvanshi, one of the accused in the high-profile Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, and directed her to surrender before the concerned authorities within three weeks.
The court, however, observed that if the trial does not make sufficient progress, she may approach the court again for bail after six months.
A Bench comprising Justice MM Sundresh and Justice PV Varale passed the order while hearing a plea filed by the Meghalaya government challenging the grant of bail.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on 23 July.
During the proceedings, the Bench made broader observations on changing social values, family structures and the growing dependence on technology.
The judges remarked that while today’s generation may have access to more information, they often struggle to cope with emotional pressures and seek immediate solutions to personal problems.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Meghalaya government, said young people today possess more information than knowledge.
Justice Varale observed that many people treat WhatsApp forwards as facts, while the court said weakening family structures and excessive gadget use are affecting relationships and children’s emotional development.
Prosecutors accuse Sonam Raghuvanshi of conspiring with her alleged lover to murder her husband during their honeymoon in Shillong, though she denies the charges.
