Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid heartfelt tributes to legendary playback singer S Janaki, stating that her death has created a void in the world of music and culture.

Sharing his condolences on X, Prime Minister Modi said S Janaki’s unforgettable songs transcended languages and generations, earning admiration from millions across the country.

The Prime Minister said her musical legacy would continue to inspire and delight audiences for years to come. He also extended his sympathies to her bereaved family, devoted fans, and the entire music fraternity, praying for peace for her soul.

The iconic vocalist breathed her last at a private hospital in Mysore on Saturday at the age of 88.

S Janaki’s granddaughter confirmed the veteran singer’s demise through a social media post, signalling the end of an illustrious chapter in Indian cinema.

The legendary artist began her playback career with the 1957 Tamil film Vidhiyin Vilayattu.

During the same year, S Janaki entered Malayalam cinema and soon won widespread acclaim by mastering the language’s pronunciation, expressions, and subtle vocal nuances. Her commitment to authenticity earned immense respect from audiences, and she went on to dominate Malayalam playback singing for several decades, particularly from the 1970s.

Throughout a remarkable career spanning six decades, S Janaki recorded more than 48,000 songs in 20 languages, establishing herself as one of the most accomplished playback singers in Indian history. Her exceptional contribution to music brought her four National Film Awards and an impressive 33 State Film Awards. Her timeless songs continue to resonate with listeners, ensuring that her influence on Indian music will remain everlasting.
