On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to make Yoga a regular part of their daily lives while leading International Day of Yoga celebrations at Kolkata’s Red Road.
Speaking at the nationwide event, PM Modi said Yoga should not be observed only on a single day each year but adopted as a long-term habit that benefits individuals, families and communities. He encouraged people to carry the practice forward to future generations and highlighted the government’s Yoga 365 initiative, which aims to promote year-round participation.
The Prime Minister said a healthier society contributes to a stronger and more confident nation. He also offered his wishes on International Yoga Day and praised the people of Kolkata for supporting cleanliness efforts and participating in Yoga activities.
This year’s celebrations centred on the theme ‘Yoga for Healthy Ageing’ and highlighted how Yoga can support physical fitness, mental well-being and active lifestyles across different age groups.
PM Modi noted that Yoga can help people remain energetic and capable as they grow older, stressing that advancing age should not limit personal growth and potential.
Referring to teachings from the Bhagavad Gita, the Prime Minister spoke about the importance of maintaining balance in diet, daily activities, work and rest, saying such balance helps improve overall well-being.
Around 35,000 people joined the Prime Minister in performing the Common Yoga Protocol at Red Road.
Authorities said large-scale Yoga sessions took place across Kolkata, with participation expected to reach nearly one million people.
Observed every year on June 21, International Day of Yoga continues to attract growing participation worldwide, promoting healthier lifestyles and greater awareness of physical and mental wellness.
