At a ceremony held in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah participated in the President’s Colour Award event for the National Disaster Response Force on Thursday. He commended the force for its commitment and service over the past 20 years, saying its work has earned widespread public faith and credibility across the country.
During the ceremony, the Home Minister inspected the parade and received the salute from NDRF personnel. Senior officials of the force also participated in the event, marking a major milestone in the organisation’s journey.
Speaking at the function, Shah described the President’s Colour as one of the country’s most prestigious honours for a uniformed force. He said the award reflected the courage, discipline, and commitment shown by NDRF teams over the last two decades.
The Minister noted that the force had become a symbol of hope during emergencies and natural disasters across the country.
According to Shah, people feel reassured when NDRF teams reach affected areas because of the organisation’s strong track record in rescue operations and humanitarian assistance.
The Home Minister also highlighted the force’s role in saving both human and animal lives during disasters. He said the government’s focus remains on reducing casualties and limiting damage to property through better preparedness and rapid response mechanisms.
Referring to disaster management reforms introduced in recent years, Shah said the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi had strengthened response systems and preparedness measures since 2014. He added that the country was moving towards the goal of achieving minimal disaster-related casualties.
The President’s Colour, also called the ‘Nishaan’, is awarded to military and paramilitary forces in recognition of distinguished service and exceptional performance. It is one of the highest honours for a uniformed organisation in India.
