PM Modi Urges All Parties To Back Women’s Reservation Bill; Offers Credit To Opposition

Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly encouraged all political parties to jointly support the women’s reservation Bill, underlining the urgent need to improve women’s participation in national decision-making.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister criticised continued resistance to the Bill, stating that procedural arguments should not be used to postpone a long-overdue reform. He noted that the matter has been pending for around 30 years and now requires unanimous approval.

In a significant outreach, PM Modi proposed granting full recognition to Opposition parties for the Bill’s passage. He asserted that the government was not concerned about taking credit and would even publicly acknowledge the Opposition’s contribution if they supported the legislation.

During a special three-day parliamentary session from April 16 to 18, lawmakers will deliberate on several key Bills, including the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Delimitation Bill, 2026.

The Prime Minister called on Opposition members not to hinder the progress of ‘nari shakti’, cautioning that obstructing the Bill would be detrimental. He also advised against turning the issue into a political contest, emphasising that its success would benefit the entire nation.

Highlighting progress at the grassroots level, PM Modi said women have already demonstrated strong leadership locally.

Extending similar representation to state and national legislatures, the Prime Minister added, would enhance sensitivity and bring valuable perspectives into governance. He also stressed that the country possesses ample female talent.

Taking a subtle swipe at critics, PM Modi remarked that Parliament already has sufficient capacity to accommodate more representatives after delimitation, noting that the government had anticipated this need and built a larger facility accordingly.
