Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that Indian Railways has undergone a structural transformation and now sets new benchmarks through sustained reforms and advanced technology.

The article emphasised that the government adopted a ‘safety first’ approach from the outset of PM Modi’s first term, prioritising systemic upgrades and consistent funding. This strategy has significantly reduced accident rates, even as train operations and passenger volumes increased.
Indian Railways recorded 135 accidents in 2014-15, which declined sharply to 16 in 2025-26, marking an 89 per cent reduction.
The consequential accident index also improved from 0.11 to 0.01, indicating safer operations per kilometre travelled.
Fatalities have also decreased substantially, with deaths falling from 292 in 2014-15 to 16 in 2025-26.
The reforms have strengthened reliability across a vast and complex network that serves as a critical lifeline for millions.
Vaishnaw highlighted that more than two crore passengers use the railways daily, including workers, students, families, and security personnel, making safety a matter of public trust rather than a mere operational metric.
The transformation reflects a comprehensive approach combining governance, funding, and innovation.
