A diet high in salt may accelerate memory decline in men, according to research conducted by Edith Cowan University, highlighting the importance of dietary habits in maintaining brain health.
The study found that excessive sodium intake may negatively affect episodic memory, which allows individuals to recall personal experiences and past events.
Researchers tracked 1,208 participants over 72 months, analysing their sodium intake and cognitive performance.
The findings showed that men with higher sodium intake experienced faster memory decline, while researchers found no significant link in women.
Although the body needs sodium for essential functions, high intake increases the risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular conditions.
Lead researcher Samantha Gardener noted that while the exact mechanisms remain unclear, high sodium levels may contribute to brain inflammation, damage blood vessels, and reduce blood flow to the brain.
In a related development, a separate study from Israel explored how people recall memories over time. It found that while the clarity of memories may fade, the explanations individuals provide for those memories tend to remain detailed and consistent.
The researchers analysed responses from 421 participants and observed that although recall accuracy declined, the structure and depth of explanations remained stable.
Subtle changes in wording suggested that individuals’ confidence in their memories may decrease as time passes.
Published in Communications Psychology, the study indicates that even when memories become less precise, the reasoning behind them can still serve as a reliable indicator of their accuracy, offering valuable insights for both legal and clinical contexts.
