Lancet Study Flags Obesity, Alcohol, Hepatitis As Top Drivers Of Liver Disease

A recent study published in The Lancet has identified three primary risk factors contributing to the growing global burden of liver disease.

Researchers highlighted obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, and viral hepatitis as the leading causes behind the sharp rise in liver-related illnesses worldwide.

The study emphasised that lifestyle changes, combined with persistent gaps in healthcare access, have significantly accelerated the incidence of liver disorders across both developed and developing nations.

The analysis underscored that obesity has emerged as a dominant contributor, largely due to the increasing prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease linked to poor dietary habits and sedentary lifestyles.

Simultaneously, harmful alcohol intake continues to drive liver damage, particularly in regions with high consumption patterns.

Viral hepatitis, especially hepatitis B and C infections, remains a critical concern, with many cases going undiagnosed or untreated due to limited screening and awareness.

The study stressed the urgent need for integrated public health strategies that address prevention, early detection, and treatment.

Researchers called for improved vaccination coverage, wider screening programmes, and stronger policy measures to reduce alcohol misuse and promote healthier lifestyles. They also highlighted the importance of strengthening healthcare systems to ensure timely diagnosis and management of liver conditions.

Experts noted that without immediate intervention, liver disease cases could escalate further, placing a significant strain on healthcare infrastructure and economic resources.

The findings reinforce the need for coordinated global action to mitigate risk factors and improve long-term health outcomes.
