At least five people were killed and 20 others injured in a powerful explosion at a house in Sri Sathya Sai district on Wednesday, police said.
The incident occurred in Kummaravandla Palli village under Kadiri mandal, where detonators and gas cylinders stored inside a worker’s house exploded, destroying the structure. The impact of the blast also damaged several nearby houses.
Authorities confirmed that five people died in the explosion, while 20 others sustained injuries. The injured were shifted to a government hospital, with 12 reported to be in critical condition.
Firefighters and police teams rushed to the site immediately and launched rescue and relief operations.
Preliminary reports indicate that at least four detonators were stored in the house. Officials suspect that both the explosives and gas cylinders were kept illegally.
A case has been registered, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion and any violations involved.
V Anitha, the State Home Minister, expressed shock over the loss of lives. She spoke with the district Collector and Superintendent of Police to assess the situation.
V Anitha termed the deaths tragic and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured while expediting relief efforts. She also assured support to the victims’ families.
Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu conveyed deep anguish over the incident and instructed authorities to provide advanced treatment to the injured.
Specialised medical teams have been deployed to monitor those in critical condition.
The district administration has intensified relief operations. Officials have ordered a detailed inquiry into the storage of detonators at the site.
Authorities have also been directed to take strict measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
