Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday intensified his criticism of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He claimed that former Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir is acting as a political instrument.
The Minister alleged that this indirectly advances the construction of a Babri-style mosque in the state.
Kabir, who has recently launched his own party, is also in the fray for the upcoming Assembly elections.
While addressing a public rally in Falakata in Alipurduar district, Amit Shah alleged a deliberate strategy behind Kabir’s exit from the ruling party.
“Mamata Banerjee wants to build Babri Masjid by expelling her pawn Humayun Kabir from her party. Mamata Banerjee and her nephew should listen to this loud and clear Babri Mosque will never be built on this land,” he said.
In his address, Amit Shah also criticised Mamata Banerjee. He alleged that she prioritised her nephew’s political future over governance during her tenure. Although he did not name Abhishek Banerjee directly, observers saw his remarks as a clear reference.
The Minister further contrasted this approach with that of Narendra Modi. He stated that the Prime Minister treats all citizens equally.
“The Chief Minister had only one nephew, whom she wanted to succeed her as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal. For Prime Minister Narendra Modi, each one of you is either his niece or his nephew. But Mamata Banerjee should get it loud and clear that your days will be over soon. Today, a Bharatiya Janata Party Chief Minister took oath in Bihar. In neighbouring Odisha, there is also a BJP Chief Minister. Now it is the turn for West Bengal,” HM Shah said.
Referring to the broader political landscape, Amit Shah asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party is expanding its presence across states. He indicated that West Bengal could be the next state where the party aims to form the government.
Earlier, while speaking at another rally in Rajganj in Jalpaiguri district, Amit Shah raised the issue of illegal infiltration. He said the BJP would implement measures in West Bengal similar to those carried out in Assam if it comes to power.
“You just cast your vote in favour of the BJP this time. It will then be our duty to track illegal infiltrators and those within the Trinamool Congress who helped them settle in West Bengal. At the same time, anti-social elements enjoying the patronage of the ruling party will also be arrested and sent behind bars,” the Home Minister said.
These remarks come at a time when political campaigning in West Bengal is gaining momentum ahead of the elections scheduled later this month. The sharp exchange of allegations highlights the intensifying contest between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress.
The statements reflect the BJP’s continued focus on issues such as governance, security, and political accountability. They form part of the party’s campaign strategy in the state.
