At least 29 people lost their lives after a Russian An-26 military transport aircraft crashed in Crimea, the Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed.
The victims included six crew members and 23 passengers travelling on board the aircraft.
Officials stated that the aircraft lost contact during a scheduled flight over the Crimean Peninsula before crashing into a cliff.
Search and rescue teams later located the wreckage and confirmed that there were no survivors, indicating the severity of the impact.
Preliminary assessments suggest that a technical malfunction led to the crash, with authorities ruling out any form of hostile engagement.
The aircraft had been operating a routine mission at the time of the incident, reinforcing concerns about mechanical reliability in ageing fleets.
The An-26 serves as a durable and versatile light military transport aircraft, carrying both cargo and personnel over short and medium distances. It has served as a dependable workhorse in military aviation for decades.
The tragedy comes months after another fatal aviation incident in December 2025, when an Antonov An-22 crashed during a test flight near Ivankovo in Russia’s Ivanovo region.
That aircraft had taken off following maintenance work and was believed to be undergoing evaluation when it went down.
Authorities confirmed that all individuals on board that flight also died, further highlighting persistent safety concerns in military aviation.
The latest crash has renewed focus on operational risks, as investigators continue efforts to determine the precise cause and prevent similar incidents in the future.
