The United States has cautioned Iran against any attempt to introduce a toll mechanism in the Strait of Hormuz, describing such a move as unlawful and hazardous to global trade.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that one of the immediate concerns following the current tensions could be Tehran seeking to regulate access through the critical maritime corridor. He stated that imposing charges on transit would violate international norms and endanger global stability.

Rubio emphasised that coordinated international action would be necessary to address any such development. He confirmed that Washington has already initiated discussions with allies and partners to prepare a collective response strategy.

Marco Rubio clarified that the United States does not intend to dominate the response but will actively contribute alongside other nations. He stressed that responsibility must be widely shared among countries dependent on the route.

The Secretary highlighted that numerous nations, including those in Asia and beyond, rely heavily on the Strait for energy shipments and trade flows. He noted that the issue extends beyond Western economies and demands broader participation.

Rubio also warned against allowing any single nation to assert unilateral control over international waterways. He underscored the importance of preserving open and secure sea lanes free from coercive control.

Marco Rubio added that discussions with global partners indicate increasing consensus on addressing the matter collectively, reflecting strong international concern over potential disruptions in one of the world’s most vital shipping corridors.
