Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday rebuked the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, saying that questioning the Speaker’s integrity harms the credibility of India’s democratic institutions.
While speaking during the proceedings, HM Shah stated that the situation did not involve any unusual incident that justified prolonged confrontation in the House.
The Home Minister said, “There was no extraordinary incident, yet a discussion of 10 hours had been scheduled. In fact, the debate continued for nearly 13 hours.”
HM Shah noted that more than forty-two Members of Parliament contributed to the debate. According to him, this level of participation indicated that the House had allowed adequate space for members to present their opinions.
He said the extensive discussion reflected the functioning of democratic dialogue within Parliament.
Speaker’s Ruling Holds Authority
The Home Minister pointed out that although members may disagree with the Speaker’s decisions, the rules of the Lok Sabha clearly state that the Speaker’s ruling remains final.
Despite this established practice, he criticised the Opposition for casting doubts on the Speaker’s personal integrity.
HM Shah highlighted, “India’s democracy has earned credibility and prestige not only within the country but across the world. The global community recognises the strength of our democratic institutions.”
The Home Minister warned that raising questions about the Speaker’s integrity could create doubts about the functioning of India’s democratic framework worldwide.
He stressed that the Speaker serves as the presiding authority and guardian of the House, making the office central to maintaining parliamentary discipline.
HM Shah explained that disagreements related to the Speaker are usually resolved through discussions rather than confrontational approaches.
He said, “Usually, members meet the Speaker in his chamber. The Speaker often calls joint meetings of members from both sides and mediates to resolve issues.”
The Home Minister remarked, “Nothing can be more shameful than creating such a situation.”
He emphasised that the Speaker’s office remains above party politics to ensure neutrality.
HM Shah concluded, “For 75 years, both Houses of Parliament have strengthened the foundations of our democracy. Today, the Opposition has cast doubts on that very foundation and credibility.”
