India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Thursday conveyed official condolences following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Representing the Government of India, Misri visited the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi and signed the condolence register.
During the visit, Misri also met Iran’s Ambassador to India Mohammad Fathali and expressed sympathy over the leader’s demise.
The diplomatic gesture reflected India’s formal response to the major political development in Iran.
According to reports, Khamenei died following a large-scale military strike carried out by the United States and Israel on February 28.
The attack marked a dramatic turning point in Iran’s 46-year Shia theocratic governance structure.
Iran announced nationwide mourning immediately after the incident. Authorities across the country organised memorial events while urging citizens to maintain unity and resilience.
Officials described the attack as an act of aggression against the nation.
The Iranian embassy in New Delhi has invited members of the diplomatic community, Indian citizens, and other visitors to express condolences.
The condolence book remains open on March 5, March 6, and March 9 for those wishing to sign it.
Ambassador Fathali issued a stern warning regarding the strikes. He stated that Iran would respond firmly to what he described as criminal military aggression by the United States and Israel.
Speaking to journalists, Fathali said Iran had been engaged in negotiations before the attack occurred. He argued that the strikes abruptly ended diplomatic engagement.
According to him, Iran did not initiate the confrontation but faced direct military action.
The envoy also alleged that civilian areas became targets during the assault. He claimed that elementary schools were struck during the attacks and that many students lost their lives.
Fathali described the situation as deeply tragic and accused the attackers of expanding the conflict beyond military objectives.
Addressing reports about a US submarine striking an Iranian naval vessel in the Indian Ocean, the ambassador stated that Washington understands Iran’s capabilities. He suggested that Iran retain strategic leverage regarding the conflict’s duration.
Fathali also warned that Iran would target any military bases used to launch attacks against it.
However, he emphasised that Tehran maintains friendly relations with neighbouring countries and does not initiate attacks against them.
Commenting on relations with India, the envoy said both nations share strong historical ties. He expressed hope that bilateral relations would continue to strengthen despite rising regional tensions.
Fathali reiterated that Iran prefers peace but remains prepared for conflict if necessary.
