The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit has debunked a widely circulated AI-generated video. The video falsely shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing free gold for Aadhaar card holders.
The government clarified that no such scheme exists and warned citizens against falling prey to digital misinformation.
According to PIB Fact Check, the manipulated video claims that the central government plans to distribute one tola of gold free of cost to individuals holding Aadhaar cards.
Officials categorically denied the assertion, stating that neither the Prime Minister nor any government department has announced such a programme.
The fact-checking agency described the video as digitally altered and misleading. It urged the public not to believe or circulate the content, stressing that such false narratives often aim to lure citizens into financial scams.

PIB advised users to verify any welfare-related announcements through official government portals or authorised departmental communication channels. It said reliance on unverified social media posts increases the risk of fraud and identity misuse.
The clarification comes amid a surge in AI-generated and heavily edited videos circulating online since December 2025.
Several of these clips promote fictitious government schemes, including offers of free gold, smartphones, laptops, and cash benefits linked to Aadhaar or bank accounts.
Independent fact-checking organisations, including PTI Fact Check and Factly, have also examined similar viral claims. They independently confirmed that these videos carry no factual basis and misuse public figures’ images and voices through artificial intelligence tools.
Experts note that advances in AI have made it easier to fabricate convincing visuals and audio. This has increased the challenge of distinguishing authentic government communication from fraudulent content.
Authorities have repeatedly cautioned users to treat sensational welfare claims with scepticism.
From a policy standpoint, officials emphasised that all legitimate central government schemes follow formal announcement protocols. These include notifications through official ministries, gazette publications, and verified digital platforms.
PIB Fact Check reiterated that the government does not announce welfare measures through random videos or forwarded messages.
It, however, encouraged citizens to report suspicious content to the appropriate cybercrime and fact-checking channels.
The latest clarification forms part of a broader effort by authorities to counter digital misinformation and protect citizens from financial deception.
Officials stressed that public awareness remains the most effective defence against such frauds.
As manipulated content continues to proliferate online, the government has called for greater digital literacy and responsible sharing practices. It underlined that verifying information before forwarding it can prevent economic harm and curb the spread of false narratives.
