Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday described the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam as a unique initiative that reflects the living unity of India’s traditions while honouring their distinct identities.
Speaking in a blog post, he said the platform strengthens the spirit of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’ and brings people from across the country closer together.

The Prime Minister recalled meeting participants during his recent visit to the Somnath Temple in Gujarat, who had previously attended both the Saurashtra-Tamil Sangamam and Kashi-Tamil Sangamam.
Their appreciation for such cultural exchanges inspired him to share his thoughts on the initiative.
PM Modi emphasised the significance of Kashi as the venue for the Sangamam.
“It is in Kashi that Baba Vishwanath resides, while Tamil Nadu has Rameswaram,” he noted, highlighting historical and spiritual connections.
The Prime Minister also referenced figures such as Saint Kumaraguruparar Swamigal and poet Mahakavi Subramania Bharati, who linked Tamil culture with Kashi through scholarship and spirituality.
Growth of the Sangamam Since 2022
Since its inaugural edition in 2022, the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam has expanded in scale and depth. Participants from Tamil Nadu, including scholars, students, artisans, and professionals, travel to Kashi, Prayagraj, and Ayodhya to engage in academic sessions, cultural performances, exhibitions, and community initiatives.
The fourth edition, which began in December 2025 with the theme ‘Tamil Karkalam – Learn Tamil’, provided opportunities for Kashi residents to learn Tamil.
The Sangamam also featured the translation of the ancient Tamil literary classic Tholkappiyam into multiple languages and the Sage Agasthya Vehicle Expedition (SAVE), which conducted health and digital literacy camps en route from Tenkasi to Kashi.
PM Modi lauded the participation of thousands of young people, noting that the Sangamam nurtures talent and creativity.
Special trains from Tamil Nadu to Uttar Pradesh carried participants, welcomed with songs and celebrations at railway stations, fostering a memorable cultural experience.
The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to the people of Kashi and Uttar Pradesh for their hospitality and highlighted the valedictory function held in Rameswaram, attended by Vice President CP Radhakrishnan.
According to PM Modi, the initiative strengthens cultural understanding, fosters academic and people-to-people exchanges, and reinforces India’s shared civilisational ethos.
