A pregnant Bengali woman who was allegedly wrongly deported to Bangladesh last year has given birth to a baby boy at a government hospital in West Bengal.
Sunali Khatun returned to India in December 2025, six months after being deported on suspicion of being a Bangladeshi citizen. She delivered the child on Monday. The delivery took place at Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital in Birbhum district.
Abhishek Banerjee Congratulates Mother; Announces Hospital Visit
Following the development, Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee congratulated Khatun. He also announced that he would meet her at the hospital on Tuesday.
Taking to X, Banerjee posted, “I am deeply moved and genuinely heartened to learn that Sunali Khatun has given birth to a healthy baby boy at Rampurhat Medical College, Birbhum. This moment of joy feels even more profound against the backdrop of the injustice she was subjected to. In a shocking abuse of power, she was FALSELY BRANDED as a Bangladeshi and FORCIBLY DEPORTED TO BANGLADESH by the Delhi Police and the Union Government.”
Referring to Khatun’s experience last year, Banerjee said her treatment amounted to a grave violation of dignity.
“Her ordeal was a violation of dignity that no citizen, least of all a pregnant mother, should ever be forced to endure. Yet, through it all Sunali displayed extraordinary courage and resolve. This is a triumph of humanity. Tomorrow, during my visit to Birbhum, I will personally meet Sunali at the hospital to convey my best wishes to her and her newborn. My prayers remain with her family,” the post added.

Khatun returned to India on December 6, 2025, following a Supreme Court order. She had been forcibly deported to Bangladesh in June while pregnant, and remained there for nearly six months.
Khatun was sent back along with her eight-year-old son, who had also been deported with her. After her return, she was admitted to Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital for medical examination and care.
Despite her return, four others remain stranded in Bangladesh. These include Khatun’s husband and members of another family linked to a woman identified as Sweety Bibi.
Background of the Deportation Case
In June 2025, Delhi Police arrested six people, including Khatun, on suspicion of being Bangladeshi infiltrators. Although all of them reportedly possessed valid Indian citizenship documents, they were deported to Bangladesh, where they were subsequently arrested by local police and jailed.
Legal petitions were later filed in both the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court seeking their return to India.
