Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed deep sorrow over the passing of veteran Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, describing him as a statesman who dedicated his life to public welfare.
The Prime Minister shared his condolence message on X, noting that Patil brought decades of experience to Indian politics, having served as MLA, MP, Union Minister, and Speaker of both the Maharashtra Assembly and the Lok Sabha. PM Modi added that he had interacted with Patil on several occasions, including a recent meeting at his residence, and extended his sympathies to the bereaved family.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid homage, recalling Patil as a ‘seasoned leader’ whose contributions had left a lasting mark on national development. He offered prayers for the family during this difficult time.

Veteran Leader Dies in Latur
Shivraj Patil passed away at his residence ‘Devghar’ in Latur, Maharashtra, early on Friday after a brief illness, family members confirmed. Aged 90, he is survived by his son, Shailesh Patil, daughter-in-law Archana, who is associated with the BJP, and two granddaughters.
Patil’s political journey spanned more than five decades. He served as India’s Union Home Minister from 2004 to 2008 and held the position of the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha between 1991 and 1996.
He later assumed charge as the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh from 2010 to 2015.
Patil began his political career on 12 October 1935 as the municipal council chief of Latur and later won election to the Maharashtra Assembly in the early 1970s.
He went on to win the Latur Lok Sabha seat seven times, emerging as one of the most influential leaders from the Marathwada region. His only electoral setback in the constituency came in 2004, when he lost to BJP candidate Rupatai Patil Nilangekar.
Those who worked closely with him remembered Patil for his calm demeanour and refusal to engage in personal attacks.
His proficiency in Marathi, English and Hindi, combined with his deep understanding of constitutional matters, earned him admiration across party lines.
A party colleague fondly recalled his disciplined study habits, articulate speech and commitment to maintaining dignity in public life, qualities that defined his long and distinguished career.
