Cohesity To Invest $1 Billion In India To Boost Data Security & AI Engineering

Cohesity, the US-based data security software company backed by Nvidia and Japan’s SoftBank, has announced an investment of $1 billion in India over the next five years.

The company aims to expand its engineering divisions and significantly increase its market share in one of its fastest-growing regions.

Chief Executive Officer Sanjay Poonen made the announcement on Thursday, highlighting India’s strategic importance in Cohesity’s global operations.

Cohesity specialises in AI-powered software that helps organisations protect and manage their data against sophisticated cyber threats, which have surged in both scale and complexity in the age of artificial intelligence.

Poonen emphasised that the company’s growth plans reflect a commitment to building advanced security and resilience capabilities for customers worldwide.

“We are investing even more in expanding the talented teams here, and they are building the future of data security and empowering our customers to build cutting-edge, AI-driven security and resilience capabilities,” he said.

Rapid Headcount Growth and New Centres

Following its acquisition of Veritas’ data protection business last year, Cohesity’s India headcount has risen sharply—from 700 to around 2,200 employees.

The company has opened a new centre in Bengaluru to complement its existing facility in Pune, strengthening its engineering and product development footprint.

Poonen, formerly the COO of VMware, noted that India already ranks among Cohesity’s top ten markets in terms of revenue contribution, with the US accounting for more than half of the global share.

He added that with continued investments, India could break into the top five in the coming years.

A major focus for the India centres will be software engineering and support.

While India is not yet the primary driver of the company’s product development and competitive advantage, the region is scaling rapidly across engineering, product design, operations and customer-facing roles, with increased emphasis on hiring engineering graduates.

Engineering teams in India work across three core areas: multi-cloud data protection, advanced security and AI.

“The India team often takes the lead in multi-cloud workload connector work, which happens between Bengaluru and Pune. Many of those projects begin in India and finish in the US, depending on where the engineering lead is based. There will also be more focus on security and AI-related work in the future,” Poonen said.

Strong Client Base and Rising Cyber Threats

Cohesity’s global clients include Salesforce and Delta Airlines, while in India it serves top banks, telecommunications firms and IT service providers such as Infosys.

The country is a vital market as businesses rapidly adopt digital technologies and face increasing cybersecurity challenges.

A recent company survey revealed that 61 per cent of Indian respondents reported a cyberattack in the past 12 months.

Nearly all said it took more than 24 hours to restore data from backups, with 12 per cent requiring almost a week.

The findings underline the urgent need for robust and AI-enhanced data protection tools—an area in which Cohesity aims to strengthen its leadership.
