A New Era Of Sustainable Energy Begins With AI, Says CM Fadnavis

Maharashtra will adopt a ‘Digital Twin’ system to strengthen its renewable energy distribution, CM Fadnavis said on Thursday.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that Maharashtra is preparing to boost its electricity distribution network by adopting a ‘Digital Twin’ approach for solar power and other renewable sources.

He explained that the state-run distributor, MahaVitaran, will soon roll out an AI-driven digital upgrade in partnership with prominent global organisations.

“This marks the beginning of environment-friendly and sustainable development through AI technology in the state’s energy sector,” CM Fadnavis stated.

The Chief Minister further noted that with the support of RF and GEAPP, the advanced AI platform will set a new benchmark for energy utilities nationwide.

According to him, AI-enabled decision-making tools will improve services for consumers while strengthening MahaVitaran’s financial capacity.

“The solutions developed will offer long-term, sustainable and effective support to the power distribution sector. This is the first-ever attempt to develop a Digital Twin for electricity distribution,” he asserted.

Focus on Rural and Agricultural Benefits

CM Fadnavis further emphasised that the AI innovation will help expand the use of clean, renewable energy, especially outside urban regions.

The Chief Minister highlighted that farmers and rural consumers would greatly benefit from more reliable, easy-to-access power supplies through this digital transformation.

“With global-level AI systems and direct energy-sector collaboration, Maharashtra will deploy advanced digital solutions that will increase the accuracy of power flow, field operations and energy management,” he further added.

The Energy Department, in an official statement, said the programme will likely transform the power sector, enabling quicker decision-making, increased grid efficiency and more extensive use of solar energy.

“With enhanced green energy use, pollution levels will be reduced substantially. A reduction of even 1 per cent in power losses could save Rs 1,000-1,500 crore annually, thereby reducing financial losses considerably,” the department noted.

It further added that with international support, the project could play a crucial role in improving electricity supply and service quality in rapidly developing countries like India.

“Maharashtra now has an important opportunity to contribute to India’s vision of a sustainable, environment-friendly, and self-sufficient energy system,” the statement said.

The department also noted that through AI and digital transformation, MahaVitaran will likely modernise the state’s power infrastructure, paving the way for a new technological era.
