Russian President Vladimir Putin will begin his visit to India on Thursday with a private dinner meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Kremlin called this informal interaction at the Prime Minister’s residence one of the key highlights of the visit.
Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov said the two leaders will discuss crucial issues related to bilateral ties and the global situation.
Putin will hold both restricted and expanded talks with PM Narendra Modi. The leaders will review strategic sectors, economic cooperation, and ongoing geopolitical challenges.
They will also oversee the signing of several agreements. India and Russia plan to adopt a joint programme that will guide strategic areas of economic cooperation until 2030.
After their formal talks, both leaders will address the media. Putin will also lay a wreath at the Mahatma Gandhi memorial on Friday as part of the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit. His long-awaited visit comes amid deeper strategic engagement between New Delhi and Moscow.
The visit also follows US punitive tariffs imposed on India earlier this year over discounted Russian oil imports.
Ties Grow Stronger
India and Russia will issue a joint statement after the summit. It will outline plans across economics, finance, security, politics and other key sectors.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the visit will deliver significant outcomes in strategic, defence, energy, and trade domains. He stressed that the partnership rests on mutual understanding and respect for international law.
Peskov highlighted the historic depth of the relationship and said Moscow has stood ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with India during crucial periods.
He reaffirmed Russia’s willingness to expand cooperation in defence and emerging technologies, though he noted these areas remain sensitive.
Energy and nuclear cooperation will remain major pillars of the talks. Russia continues to supply energy to India at competitive prices, which Peskov described as mutually beneficial.
He also confirmed ongoing collaboration in India’s nuclear sector. He said Russian expertise has helped India build a strong, independent ecosystem in the field.
Trade will be another major focus. Bilateral trade has reached USD 63 billion, and both nations aim to cross USD 100 billion before 2030. Peskov indirectly criticised the United States while acknowledging attempts by ‘some actors’ to obstruct the partnership.
He said Russia plans to increase imports from India to correct the current imbalance.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the visit will help both nations review progress and strengthen their ‘Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.’
The leaders will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual concern.
