Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Johannesburg from 21 to 23 November to participate in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Wednesday.

This visit marks the fourth consecutive G20 Summit hosted in the Global South, highlighting the grouping’s growing diversity and evolving geopolitical landscape.

According to the MEA, the Prime Minister will outline India’s position across the agenda and address all three principal sessions.

Leaders at the summit will discuss inclusive and sustainable growth, global trade and financing challenges, disaster resilience, climate change, energy transitions, food systems, critical minerals, decent work opportunities, and the impact of artificial intelligence.

Alongside the summit, the Prime Minister is expected to hold several bilateral meetings with leaders attending the gathering.

These consultations are likely to focus on strengthening strategic partnerships, boosting economic cooperation and exploring collaborative initiatives with participating nations.

The MEA also confirmed that Prime Minister Modi will attend the India–Brazil–South Africa (IBSA) Leaders’ Meeting hosted by South Africa. The dialogue remains an essential platform for South–South cooperation and coordination on multilateral issues.

South Africa Highlights PM Modi’s Role in Championing the Global South

Anil Sooklal, South Africa’s High Commissioner to India, praised the Prime Minister’s consistent engagement with the African continent.

He noted that South African leaders value India’s strong diplomatic outreach. He emphasised that Prime Minister Modi’s contributions have been instrumental in shaping the collective interests of the Global South.

Sooklal also highlighted India’s pivotal role during its 2023 G20 presidency, when it steered the inclusion of the African Union as a permanent member of the grouping. He described the development as a landmark achievement, widely welcomed across Africa.

Johannesburg, South Africa’s commercial capital, will host the G20 Leaders’ Summit on 22 and 23 November.

Global policymakers will convene at the annual meeting to discuss economic stability, climate commitments and future pathways for international cooperation.
