Despite Delhi Blast, PM Modi Keeps Bhutan Commitment; Highlights Strong Bilateral Bond

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Bhutan carried deep emotional and historical significance. Coming shortly after the explosion in Delhi, many expected the trip to be postponed.

However, PM Modi’s decision to travel as scheduled demonstrated the strength of India’s commitment to Bhutan — a bond he has nurtured since his very first foreign visit as Prime Minister in 2014.

During his visit, PM Modi inaugurated the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, a landmark collaboration symbolising the enduring energy partnership between the two nations.

Global Peace Prayer Festival

A key highlight of the visit was PM Modi’s participation in the Global Peace Prayer Festival, where Buddhist leaders from across the world gathered in Bhutan to pray for global harmony.

India contributed to the event by sending the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha for public veneration — a rare gesture symbolising India’s cultural and spiritual connection with Bhutan and the larger Buddhist world.

PM Modi’s heartfelt address deeply resonated with the Bhutanese people.

He announced India’s support for the proposed railway link connecting Gelephu Mindfulness City with India, along with the establishment of an immigration check-post to facilitate smoother movement between the two nations.

His remarks blended compassion with conviction as he expressed solidarity with those affected by the Delhi explosion and reiterated India’s unwavering resolve for peace, unity, and security.

A Shared Vision for Peace and Prosperity

Bhutan’s King, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, joined PM Modi and thousands of devotees in prayers for the victims of the Delhi explosion, extending Bhutan’s sympathy and solidarity.
