Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm farewell from Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck as he departed for New Delhi on Wednesday, marking the conclusion of his two-day visit to the Himalayan Kingdom.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the visit further strengthened the time-tested friendship between India and Bhutan and advanced collaboration across energy, connectivity, and cultural domains.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi participated in the Kalachakra ‘Wheel of Time’ Empowerment Ceremony at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu.
The event formed part of the ongoing Global Peace Prayer Festival, which drew over 30,000 attendees, including international devotees and Buddhist scholars.
The prayers were presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo, Bhutan’s Chief Abbot.
Sharing his experience on social media, PM Modi wrote, “Had the honour of inaugurating the Kalachakra ‘Wheel of Time’ Empowerment with His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and His Majesty The Fourth Druk Gyalpo. Presided over by His Holiness the Je Khenpo, the ceremony holds immense spiritual significance for Buddhists worldwide.”
Meeting with the Fourth King of Bhutan
During his visit, PM Modi also met Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the revered Fourth King of Bhutan, who celebrated his 70th birth anniversary this week.
The Prime Minister conveyed India’s heartfelt felicitations and extended wishes for the King’s continued health and happiness.
The two leaders held cordial discussions on a range of bilateral and regional issues, reaffirming shared values of friendship, spirituality, and mutual respect.
The MEA noted that both sides underscored the importance of the India-Bhutan partnership in promoting peace, prosperity, and sustainable development in the region.
Following the meeting, PM Modi said on X, “Had a wonderful meeting with His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. Appreciated his extensive efforts over the years in strengthening India-Bhutan ties. We discussed cooperation in energy, trade, technology, and connectivity, and lauded progress in the Gelephu Mindfulness City Project, which aligns with our Act East Policy.”

PM Modi’s visit highlighted India’s unwavering support for Bhutan’s development journey and reaffirmed New Delhi’s commitment under the Neighbourhood First Policy.
The engagements between the leaders emphasised the spiritual, cultural, and economic dimensions of India-Bhutan relations, paving the way for deeper cooperation in the years ahead.
As the visit concluded, the Bhutanese King personally accompanied PM Modi to the Paro International Airport, symbolising the warmth and depth of the enduring bond between the two nations.
