US President Donald Trump is set to attend the official swearing-in of Sergio Gor as the new Ambassador to the Republic of India, the White House confirmed on Sunday.
The ceremony marks a significant diplomatic moment, as Gor—aged just 38—becomes the youngest US Ambassador to serve in India.
Known as one of Trump’s closest confidants, Gor previously headed the White House Presidential Personnel Office, overseeing the vetting of more than 4,000 key administrative posts.
Trump, who nominated Gor in August via his Truth Social platform, described him as ‘a trusted leader’ capable of advancing his international agenda.
“For the most populous region in the world, it is important that I have someone I can fully trust to deliver on my agenda and help us ‘Make America Great Again’. Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador,” Trump wrote.
A Strategic Appointment
The US Senate confirmed Gor’s nomination in October after Republican senators strongly endorsed his experience and loyalty.
During his confirmation hearing, Gor described India as ‘a strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond’.
He emphasised India’s economic and military rise, calling it ‘a cornerstone of regional stability and a critical partner in advancing shared prosperity and security’.
He pledged to focus on strengthening bilateral ties through deeper defence cooperation, fairer trade practices, energy security, and collaborative technological advancements.
Gor is also expected to serve as the US President’s Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, underscoring Washington’s renewed focus on the Indo-Pacific region.
During his confirmation process, Gor highlighted defence collaboration as a top priority.
He expressed interest in expanding joint military exercises, pursuing co-development and co-production of defence systems, and facilitating key defence sales to bolster India’s security framework.
Gor has already engaged with Indian leadership ahead of his official tenure.
In September, he met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New York during the UN General Assembly session. The meeting focused on advancing strategic cooperation and regional stability.
Shortly after his Senate confirmation, Gor undertook a four-day visit to India, where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior officials in New Delhi.
Commitment to Closer Ties
Following his meeting with Modi, Gor posted on X (formerly Twitter): “An honour to be with PM Narendra Modi this evening. Our relationship with India will only strengthen over the months ahead!”

As Gor prepares to assume office in New Delhi, his appointment signals a continued emphasis on deepening cooperation between the world’s two largest democracies—anchored in shared values, defence partnerships, and economic collaboration.
