India’s women wrestlers delivered an extraordinary performance at the U-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship held in Novi Sad, Serbia, with Hanshika Lamba (53 kg) and Sarika (59 kg) winning silver medals after reaching the finals of their respective categories.
Despite narrowly missing gold against strong Japanese opponents, their remarkable achievements contributed to India’s overall triumph.
The two silver medals, combined with earlier bronze victories, ensured that the Indian women’s team claimed the overall champion title at the 2025 championship.
The team amassed an impressive 125 points, surpassing the USA, which finished second with 102 points, and Japan, which placed third with 92 points.
This win marks a significant milestone for Indian women’s wrestling on the global stage.
Bronze Medal Haul Strengthens Victory
Earlier on Friday, Indian wrestlers showcased consistency and skill, bagging five bronze medals.
The medallists included Nishu (55 kg), Neha Sharma (57 kg), Pulkit (65 kg), Shrishti (68 kg), and Priya (76 kg), who demonstrated grit and technical prowess throughout their bouts.
Their performances played a crucial role in securing India’s top position in the championship rankings.
“This is a proud moment for Indian wrestling and reflects the hard work, dedication, and talent of our young women wrestlers,” said Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh in an official statement on Saturday.
He commended the athletes and coaching staff for bringing glory to the nation and emphasised that the victory is a testament to India’s growing dominance in women’s wrestling at the international level.
Vishvajit More’s Early Medal Win
Earlier in the tournament, Vishvajit More secured India’s first medal by clinching bronze in the 55 kg Greco-Roman category.
Displaying immense determination, he defeated his Kazakh opponent with a narrow 5–4 scoreline, setting the tone for India’s successful campaign at the championship.
India’s contingent in the Under-23 Senior World Wrestling Championship featured talented competitors across the Greco-Roman, women’s, and men’s freestyle categories.
Following the women’s victory, the men’s freestyle events are set to continue, with hopes high for more podium finishes.
India’s overall performance in Novi Sad signifies a new era for Indian wrestling, underlining the country’s emergence as a global force driven by young talent, strategic training, and unwavering determination.
