
WhatsApp is preparing to roll out a major update designed to curb spam and unwanted messages on its platform.
The company is currently testing a new policy that restricts how many messages users and businesses can send to people who are not saved in their contacts and who do not reply.
The move aims to create a calmer, more organised messaging experience for users.
Over time, WhatsApp has evolved from a simple chat service into a wide-ranging communication tool featuring communities, business profiles, and customer support channels.
However, this expansion has also led to a surge in unsolicited promotions and spam messages, frustrating many users.
According to a report by ‘TechCrunch’, WhatsApp is experimenting with a monthly cap on messages sent to people who fail to respond.
Each outgoing message to a non-contact will count towards this monthly limit.
For instance, if someone sends three messages to a person who doesn’t respond, all three will count towards their monthly message limit.
The company has yet to confirm the exact number of messages permitted under the new rule. It noted that it is still testing various thresholds.
Users approaching their monthly quota are likely to receive a warning.
Once the cap reaches its limit, the system may temporarily restrict sending new messages to non-contacts.
WhatsApp has clarified that this measure will not affect regular users who communicate normally with friends and family.
The feature is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing campaign to tackle spam, particularly in India. The country is the app’s largest market, with more than 500 million users.
In recent months, WhatsApp has introduced a range of anti-spam measures, including:
- Tighter rules on marketing messages,
- Unsubscribe options for business chats, and
- Limits on broadcast messages
For businesses, this update could encourage more genuine engagement rather than mass messaging.
For everyday users, it promises a cleaner, more personal inbox experience.
Although it may not completely eliminate spam, WhatsApp’s new message cap marks a significant step towards preserving the app’s original goal, fostering private, meaningful conversations.
