A technical malfunction led to a brief suspension of the Mumbai Monorail early Monday morning in the Wadala area. Several commuters were stranded mid-journey before being safely evacuated.
According to an official BMC statement, the disruption occurred around 7:16 AM between the Antophill Bus Depot and GTBN Monorail Station.
Seventeen passengers were aboard the affected monorail when it came to a standstill. All were safely rescued by 7:45 AM, with authorities confirming that no injuries were reported.
The BMC later provided an update, stating, “All 17 passengers were safely rescued by 7:45 AM. The monorail that was stuck on the track is now being towed by another monorail to clear the line.”
Emergency measures were immediately activated following the technical fault.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade assisted in transferring passengers to another monorail brought to the site for evacuation.
Officials from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and local police arrived promptly to manage the situation and inspect the malfunctioning coach.
Although the morning rush-hour services were partially affected, monorail operations are expected to resume fully once the faulty coach is removed and the technical issue is resolved.
MMRDA confirmed that a detailed investigation into the cause will be conducted, and maintenance procedures will be reviewed.
Commuters expressed relief at the swift rescue but urged authorities to ensure more reliable operations, particularly during peak travel hours.
A similar incident occurred on 19 August when 582 passengers were stranded near Mysore Colony between Chembur and Bhakti Park.
They were safely rescued by the Mumbai Fire Brigade using snorkel (ladder) vehicles, with the operation successfully completed.
